Athena Endoius

Athena Endoius
About 530-520 BCE. Height 1.47 m. Acropolis Museum 625.

  • Seated Athena from the Acropolis by Endoius, dedicated by Kallias (?).
  • Her aegis bore a gorgoneum, totally effaced, and bronze snakes were fitted at its edge.
  • The statue is so battered that we might well believe that it survived the Persians and was seen by Pausanias (thought it is possible that its state is due to re-use as building material in late antiquity).
