• In about 520 BCE the Temple of Athena on the Acropolis was provided with new pediments, of marble now.
• One end has a Gigantomachy where the fighting and falling figures can fit the gable without offending unity of scale.
• This is the work of a great sculptor, an artist who for the first time grapples with the problems posed by figures in the round (though for a single viewpoint) in twisting, violent action or collapse.
• The figures are all slightly over life-size.
