Athena in a Pediment at Eleusis

Athena in a Pediment at Eleusis
Second century CE. Height 85 cm. Eleusis Museum.

  • Some of the West Pediment figures of the Parthenon were copied (and others adjusted) at a much reduced scale for the second-century CE pediment of Temple F (or Treasury B) at Eleusis devoted to the rape of Persephone.
  • Temple F (or Treasury B) may have been dedicated to Sabina, the wife of Hadrian.
  • The so-called Parthenonian sculptures, some of which are on display in the Museum, came from this building.
