Athena Lemnia head at Bologna (Palagi Head)
Museo Civico Archeologico, Bologna.
- This head is one of the three Roman copies we have made after a Greek original bronze. The other two Roman copies are one at Dresden and the other at Campi Flegrei.
- The inlay eyes are missing and the hair has more detail.
- Hartswick argues that this Bologna marble head is a Roman classicizing creation rather than a true copy. The eyes, nose and mouth are more delicately shaped than mid-5th century Greek originals and are aligned symmetrically, not tilted.
- Studniczka replies to this that the same proportions and character is found at some copies of Athena Parthenos by Phidias, in particular the one in Prado Museum, Madrid.
