Athena on the Temple of Apollo at Eretria

Athena on the Temple of Apollo at Eretria
About 500-490 BCE. Height 0.74 m. Chalcis Museum 5.

  • The gorgoneum on the aegis of the Goddess is exceptionally prominent.
  • It recalls the earlier role of gorgons at the pediment centers.
  • The Temple of Apollo at Eretria in Euboea was destroyed by the Persians on their way to defeat at Marathon in 490 BCE.
  • The city had been closely associated with Athens, and despite the Temple's occupant it is Athena who stands at the pediment's center (this seems to be the back pediment, however).
