Athena, the Stymphalian Birds and Hercules

Athena, the Stymphalian Birds and Hercules
Metope from the Temple of Zeus. 456 BCE. Olympia Museum.

  • Hercules has just wiped out the awful birds and presents to his proctectress Athena the loot of his hunt.
  • Athena, without helmet, is seated with naked feet on a rock (= her acropolis?), clothed with a peplos and wearing the aegis.
  • This scene is without equal in all Greek art.
  • All but Hercules' trunk and legs are in Paris (Louvre).
