Athena With Crossed Aegis

Athena with Crossed Aegis
450-430 BCE. Height 1.87 m. Staatliche Museen, Berlin.

  • This statue of Athena is a copy of an original of about 450-30 BCE.
  • An unusual figure, the head with touches of the Severe, the dress so restless that the figure has been thought Hellenistic classicising made for the kings of Pergamum.
  • Most unusual the strip aegis worn like a crossed bandolier.
  • Taken by some as Myron's Athena for Samos but surely later.
