East Pediment of the Parthenon

Reconstruction of the East Pediment of the Parthenon
432 BCE. East Pediment, Acropolis Museum, Athens.

  • Of this pediment we know more of the wings, far less of the centerpiece. The later was more of an epiphany than an action group with Athena, fully grown and armed, standing before her father Zeus from whose head she sprung
  • The spectator of this event must be Olympian deities. They react in very different ways: most, not at all. Enough that they are there and this is Olympus.
  • There is no more glorious statement of the Olympian family in art or literature.
