  • The seated Athena (center) has removed her aegis indicating that she his preparing to receive her birthday gift: a new peplos (a new garment) (left).
  • Hephaestus is watching (right).
  • This peculiar removal of Athena's aegis (slung casually across her knees) pertains to one of the acts vital to a proper pompe or procession of the Panathenaic procession - namely, that of dressing up.
