Birth of Erichthonius
Attic Drinking Bowl. Codrus Painter, c.
440-430 BCE. Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Antikensammlung F 2537, Berlin.
- The Attic red-figure drinking bowl depicting the Birth of Erichthonius by the Codrus Painter (c. 440–430 BCE), preserved in the Berlin Antikensammlung, beautifully visualizes the foundational myth of Athens’ indigenous origin. The central scene captures Ge (the Earth) emerging from the ground to hand the newborn Erichthonius directly to a receptive Athena, who is flanked by the awkwardly standing father, Hephaestus, and the snake-footed early king Cecrops. Moving outward from this core group, the vase depicts an assembly of mythical Athenian royalty, including the daughters of Cecrops—Herse, Aglauros, and Pandrosos—hurrying toward or framing the event alongside the kings Erechtheus, Aegeus, and Pallas, all distinguished by their wreaths and sceptres. By surrounding this divine adoption with the past and future rulers of the city, the composition anchors the political and cultural identity of Athens directly into its miraculous, earth-born genesis.
- Beyond its civic pride, the artwork carries profound symbolic and spiritual significance. Because Erichthonius is born from the earth and given to the virgin goddess Athena, the image underscores the philosophical truth that no human is a natural-born child of Wisdom; rather, we can only become Athena’s adopted children through spiritual and intellectual cultivation. The presence of the three Cecropides introduces a moral and spiritual lesson regarding faith and obedience; in the wider myth, their tragic failure to guard the hidden child in his basket warns against profane curiosity when dealing with the divine. Ultimately, the gathering of generations around the infant symbolizes a spiritual lineage, suggesting that wisdom is a sacred legacy that must be reverently received from the divine, carefully guarded by humanity, and passed down to illuminate future generations.
