Detail of Theseus, Athena and Amphitrite by Onesimus Painter

Detail of Theseus, Athena and Amphitrite
Red-figure cup. Euphronios Potter and Onesimos Painter, c. 500–490 BCE. Louvre MNB166 and G104, Paris.

  • Within this masterwork, two specific iconographic details vividly highlight the interplay between mortals and the divine. On the left side of the composition, Athena stands gracefully while holding a small owl in her left hand—her sacred emblem of wisdom and protective vigil over the city of Athens. Meanwhile, beneath the young hero, Theseus is physically supported by a Triton, a mythical sea creature depicted with the upper body of a man and the lower tail of a fish. This fish-man acts as a living bridge between the terrestrial world and the oceanic abyss, bearing the hero safely into the presence of the sea goddess.
