Heroes wait for wind while playing dice by Leagros group

Heroes wait for wind
Attic amphora (c. 510 BCE). Virginia Museum 60.10, Richmond.

  • This amphora is attributed to the Leagros Group, a group of ancient Greek vase painters.
  • The scene depicted on the vase shows Greek heroes from the Trojan War, specifically Ajax and Achilles, playing a game of dice while waiting for the wind to change so they can set sail. In this version, the goddess Athena (or a statue of her) stands behind the players.
  • Achilles and Ajax, wearing their armor, crouch over a gaming table, absorbed in a board game with dice while Athena warns them of an impending enemy attach.
  • Their shields and helmets are behind them.
