Jason and the dragon by Douris painter

The dragon spewing forth Jason, after drinking the potion prepared by Athena
Douris Painter (c. 470 BCE). Vatican 16545, Rome.

  • The central scene on the vase depicts the mythological hero Jason being disgorged by the Colchian Dragon after drinking a potion prepared by Athena. The beard dragon, which guarded the Golden Fleece, is shown spewing forth Jason, who is being saved by Athena. The goddess is depicted wearing a Sphinx-decorated helm and a Gorgon-headed, serpent-trimmed aegis cloak, holding a spear in one hand and a small owl in the other. The golden fleece hangs on a tree behind the dragon.
  • The Douris Painter, an ancient Greek vase painter of the red-figure style, is known for his detailed and expressive depictions of mythological scenes. His work is characterized by its fine lines, intricate details, and dynamic compositions. This kylix featuring Jason and the dragon is a prime example of his skill and artistry.
