Theseus and Minotaur by Aison painter

Theseus and Minotaur
Aison Painter (c. 415 BCE). National Archaeological Museum of Spain, Madrid.

  • The central scene on the vase depicts the heroic moment when Theseus, the legendary Greek hero, defeats the Minotaur, a fearsome creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull. Theseus is shown dragging the lifeless Minotaur from the labyrinth, accompanied by the goddess Athena, who wears a crested helm and aegis vest adorned with the head of the Gorgon. Athena's presence signifies her role as a protector and guide for Theseus. Note the columns and the frieze used to indicate the palace of the Minos on Crete.
  • The Aison Painter, an ancient Greek vase painter of the red-figure style, is known for his detailed and expressive depictions of mythological scenes. His work is characterized by its fine lines, intricate details, and dynamic compositions. The kylix featuring Theseus and the Minotaur is a prime example of his skill and artistry.
