Athena Albani

Athena Albani
440 BCE. Height 1.96 m. Villa Albani 1012, Rome.

  • This statue of Athena is a copy of an original of about 440 BCE.
  • To be restored with spear in right hand, shield (?) on left harm.
  • The head made separately and does not certainly belong.
  • She wears a wolf-head cap, the 'cap of Hades', which suggests to some the Athena Itonia of Agorakritos set beside Hades (Strabo; or Zeus - Paus.) at Koroneia.
  • Dress and features are Parthonian (note the himation selvage).
