Contest of Hercules and Apollo for the tripod. The hero, who has seized the tripod with his left hand, is about to deal Apollo a blow with the club in his right. The God, who also grasps the tripod with his left hand, passes his right hand round to take an arrow from the quiver which hangs at his left side. Hercules is bearded and wears a diadem but no clothing. Between his legs is the inscription DECHIOI ("receive the blow" or better "take that!"). Apollo has long hair looped up with a diadem and falling in ringlets on his cheek. He is also nude. Between his legs is the inscription A[POL]LON ("Apollo"). Hercules and the Nemean Lion by Andocides Painter

Athena, Hercules and the Nemean lion Archaic belly amphora from Etruria, H. 0.546 m. Attributed to the Andocides Painter, 520 BCE. British Museum B 193, London. Hercules wrestling the Nemean Lion. Hercules is nude except for a red fillet around his head. He is on his knees and holds the lion upside down on his shoulder, grasping the lion's forepaw with his right hand and the lion's shoulders with his left arm. The lion digs its hind paws into Hercules' shoulders. To the left, Athena, wearing long hair, a high-crested ornamented helmet with a fillet, an aegis with scales and a fringe of snakes, long chiton, and holding a spear in her right hand. She extends her left hand to Hercules. On the right, Iolaus moves away to the right, looking back towards Hercules and Athena. Hercules, the Erymanthian boar and Athena Archaic oinochoe from Vulci. Attributed to the Andocides Potter and Lysippides Painter, 530-500 BCE. British Museum B 492, London. To the left is Hercules, wearing the lion skin and carrying a bow and quiver. He has grasped the boar by its left rear leg and lifted its hindquarters off the ground. This has caused its front legs to buckle under it, and it appears to be in a very helpless position. To the right stands Athena. She is wearing her snake aegis and a high crested helmet. She holds her spear in her left hand and gestures toward Hercules with her right. Cohen notes that Hercules wide and bushy mustache is typical of the Lysippides Painter's early period. Hercules and the Erymanthian Boar Archaic Attic Black Figure from Vulci, Etruria. Belly amphora, H. 0.528 m. The Manner of the Antimenes Painter, 530 - 510 BCE. British Museum B 161, London. At center, Hercules lifts the boar and holds it head-down over Eurystheus, who is hiding in a pithos sunk into the ground. Hercules wears a lionskin, a bow and quiver on his shoulder. Eurystheus, mostly hidden in the pithos, holds his hands in the air to ward off the boar. To the right, Athena advances towards Hercules. She wears a long chiton, the aegis bordered with snakes, a helmet, and holds a spear. On the left, Iolaos holds Hercules' club. He wears a short chiton and cuirass, with a sword at his right side.
